Das war 2000 in Cannes der große Überraschungs-Hit des Festivals. «Sense and Sensibility with martial arts» hatte Ang Lee versprochen und dies auch eingehalten.
This was the big surprise hit of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Ang Lee had promised «Sense and Sensibility with martial arts» and came through with flying colours (and fighters). In Cannes, there were round tables with Ang Lee and the actresses Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi; in Zurich, I was subsequently granted a one-to-one conversation with Ang Lee before the film’s theatrical release. Taken together, these conversations not only provide a lot of background to this great film; in addition, Ang Lee relates Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to his previous work, Michelle Yeoh draws comparisons to other wuxia films and to James Bond, while Zhang Ziyi explains the differences between the directors Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou, whose films The Road Home (1999) and House of Flying Daggers (2004) starring Zhang Ziyi we hope to screen later this year.
